DTF vs. DTG vs. UV: Which Decoration Technology Fits Your Work?

DTF, DTG, and UV are often pitched against each other as if one were simply better. They are not — they solve different decoration problems. The right question is which technology fits the products you actually sell and the demand pattern you actually have.

DTF — flexibility across fabrics and surfaces

Direct-to-film prints onto a film that is powdered, cured, and heat-pressed onto the substrate. Its strength is breadth: it works across cotton, poly blends, leather, and many hard surfaces, and it handles short runs and one-offs economically. Its cost is the ownership system this blog is built around — white ink, powder, shaker, and cure.

DTG — soft-hand prints on garments

Direct-to-garment prints water-based ink directly onto fabric. It produces a notably soft hand on light and dark cotton and is ideal for apparel-centric work where feel matters. It is more substrate-limited than DTF, and white ink maintenance is the same recurring obligation — in some respects more demanding because you are printing directly onto pretreated fabric.

UV — rigid and product decoration

UV flatbed printing cures ink instantly under UV LED light onto rigid and semi-rigid substrates — phone cases, plaques, signage, promotional products, and more. It is the right tool for product and hard-surface decoration at low-to-mid volume. It is not a garment technology, and comparing it to DTF for t-shirts is the wrong axis entirely.

The comparison that matters is not DTF vs. DTG vs. UV. It is: which technology matches the products and demand pattern of the business I operate today?

How to choose without hype

  • List the products you actually sell most — by substrate, by run length, by turnaround.
  • Map each product to the technology that decorates it with the fewest compromises.
  • If your work spans fabric and hard goods, DTF and UV may both belong in the shop — in sequence, not in competition.
  • If apparel feel is the brand, DTG may justify its maintenance for the hand it produces.

There is no winner here. There is the technology that earns its evidence against your actual work — and that is the only ranking worth making.
